Cabrillo National Monument Ride 9/11/11

Cabrillo National Monument was the ride of the day for September 11th
The day started with a lady putting her car in reverse and hitting Bernie's car. This happened across the street from the Old Town Train station.

We had a very large turnout for our "Sauntering Sunday". 35 riders for the South Bay Ride! Starting at the Admin Building to Coronado with a ferry ride back.

Nick Venuto Memorial Ride 7/9/11

Ghost Bike on Hwy 56 bike path where Nick Venuto, a San Diego cyclist, was hit and killed by a SUV May 31, 2011.
The out of control SUV went off the highway, up an embankment and over the chainlink fence.
Nick was one of two cyclists hit by the SUV. The second cyclist survived with major injuries.
Nick was 40 years old and left behind a wife and 2 children.
Nick's cycling club organized the memorial ride. They also had a memorial walk that passed by this site.
We had a good showing from our club. Francios, Dave Z, Lauren, Greta, Alan, Bernie and Marty.
Mike forgot to wear his Recyclers jersey. He is now a true Recycler.
The ride started at Westview High School.
They said there were about 300 who showed up for the memorial ride.
Several San Diego clubs were represented, which was good to see.

A True Saunter to Charlie's Best Bread 6/5/11

Our ride route took us from East County to Friars Road where we hooked up with the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. It was nice of them to let us in.
This was a true "Sauntering Sunday". Impossible for any of us to ride very fast.
We road most of Friars Road on the bike path.
We took to the sidewalk when cars driving on the bike path booted us off.
Someone said it was a hot day for a marathon. They should have been on bicycles because it was a perfect day for cycling...of course, most any day is a perfect day for cycling...
It was nice to have the whole road to ourselves.

Brian didn't have a very good day. Chased by a dog and hit head-on by a woman on a beach cruser. The woman road into his lane to avoid a shopping cart in her lane. Lots of bumps and bruises but nothing broken.
The rest of us made it home in one piece. It really was a beautiful day to be out riding.

Memorial Day 2011

Memorial Day in San Diego was absolutely, positively gorgeous!
After rain on Sunday, Monday was picture perfect.

We headed up to Cabrillo and joined a hundred or so bikers on their way to Ft Rosecrans.

January 9th was William's Crusin the Eastern Hood Ride...AKA Willy's Hilly Ride. Charles' favorite route.
Charles punctured one of his tubeless tires in 2 places on the 52 bike path.
The holes were too big for even electrical tape to slow the escaping air. Charles had to do a little walking and call for a ride home.

SDBC's 23rd Annual Light Up A Life Toy Ride 12/12/10

We had a good turnout from the Recyclers for SDBC's Light Up A Life Toy Ride starting from UC Cyclery in La Jolla.

George's antlers kind of wilted in the damp morning air.
Paul & Greta reluctantly entered the best dressed or decorated tandem something-or-other contest with the urging from the other Recyclers and won.
Just as it was announced the ride was about to start, everyone heard a loud "BANG". The starting gun?...No...the front tire of Paul's tandem blew up. The good news: it blew right in front of the bike shop.
The bad news: The ride started without Paul and Greta...they caught up as soon as the tire was fixed and on the road again.

A Very Wet Poinsettia/San Marcos Loop 10/17/10

This week's diehard Recyclers started from the Poinsettia train station in Carlsbad. Since newcomer Mark said it wasn't raining (and those Padre Dam guys know their water),...we shall say, the light mist we felt before leaving, turned into heavy misting later in the ride.
We stopped for a break at the eastern end of the San Luis Rey River bike path. We crossed the road and Glen got a flat.
We fixed the flat, then Neil fell off his bike.
Of course the Recyclers are always prepared for such mishaps.
Neil's bike was OK too...thanks for asking...
We finally made it out of the parking lot and back on the bike path.
We took the bike path extention from College Blvd to Sante Fe Ave.

Vomiting Sheep Ride & Dennis Get Well Tour 8/22/10

We started this week's ride at Hospitality Point in Mission Bay.
Dennis is still recovering from a recent crash resulting in some broken ribs. We decided it was time to pay him a visit.
We packed up a Get Well bouquet in a bucket which fit inside one of Brian's panniers.

We headed out from Hospitality Point in another chilly and foggy morning.
Marty was back and got to ride the whole route!
Brian got yelled at by a jogger because he was riding on the sidewalk. Russel made sure we all new he was just following Brian...(no guilt there)Russel thought Brian sure picked a nice surface to ride on though.

Solana Beach to Oceanside 8/1/10

Another good turnout for our Sauntering Sunday ride! Several visitors this week.
We headed North along the coast from the Solana Beach Train Station.

Greta's 2 nephews Mark and Sean were visiting from Northern California. They're on Glen's antique 3-5 speed Schwinn Tandem. (3 gears worked)
Who needs fancy travel bags? Just the basics: bananas, breakfast bars & water.

We met up with Diane and a few other members of Glen's family along the route.
We got to meet Avery for the first time.

NEW ROUTE! A Jewel, A Loch and A Magic Cristobal 2/28/10

We had another new ride this week mapped-out and lead by William. "A Jewel, A Loch and A Magic Cristobal" started from Gillman Drive in LA JOLLA (which means: A JEWEL).
Ed showed up to ride with us this week.
The route took us from La Jolla to Mira Mesa.
It rained long and hard the day before so there were still some wet roads but we were treated to some very pretty views a little later in the morning.

The route took us to Miramar Lake in Mira Mesa. About a 5 mile loop around the lake. (This is the "LOCH" in the route title)

If you like puffy white clouds and blue skies, this was the day for you. This is the west side of Miramar Lake.

Our ride for Valentine's Day started at Woodglen Park in Santee. Several Recyclers were in Palm Springs this weekend for the Tour de Palms Springs.

The Early Birds started this week from the Encinitas Train Station. Russell, Scott, Steve, Glen, Greta, Paul and Neil.
The main group started from the Poinsettia Train station. Greta was in her glory. A guys to gals ratio of 20 to one.
6 is the number of Recyclers in the Dog House this week. (As if anything changes when they leave home) 5 for following Paul's lead and Paul for being...well, Paul.

We got to see Dennis again this week.

We picked up two riders (Jim and Craig) along our route. They rode most of the way with us before breaking away somewhere in San Marcos.
We tried a new coffee stop in San Marcos called Old California Coffee House.
A lady asked Greta if she was the only woman in the group. Greta said, "I am today." The lady replied, "You are very brave!" Yep, a scary looking bunch indeed!
This woman was surrounded by 20 men in lycra and never looked up from her newspaper. Wonder what she told her friends when she went home that day.
Frank and the rest of the Recyclers leaving the coffee stop and heading home. Another nice ride, as always!

Charlie's Best Bread Ride 2/7/10

The weather was a little questionable in the morning but we had a good turnout for our Charlie's Best Bread Ride.

Marty didn't have to work today so he got to ride the full route with us. We hadn't seen Rod for awhile and he also showed up for our ride.

Janet told George, "Sorry pal, this week I'm taking the lead!"
Nunez was back from traveling and happy to be riding with us...as happy as Nunez can be.
We ran into the usual problem areas where the water doesn't drain well but overall, the roads were in fairly good shape after all the rain we had.

The wind was a bit strong in areas along the route but Mission Bay was still quite nice.

Weiss' 5 Cities Ride 1/24/10

The Early Birds rode from Santee through Lake Murray.
We ran into some barriers along the bike path which made for an interesting obstacle course.
With all the rain we had last week, the path had its problems like this sink hole. We begged the maintenance worker to let us through before he closed off the other side of the road. He let us through with only a lecture which saved us from having to turn around and go back the way we came.
The main group started from Windmill Farms in Del Cerro. This time Marty joined us!

Instead of heading down the Fletcher Parkway hill, Marty took us on a side street.
