Consider a man riding a bicycle. Whoever he is, we can say three things about him. We know he got on the bicycle and started to move. We know that at some point he will stop and get off. Most important of all, we know that if at any point between the beginning and the end of his journey he stops moving and does not get off the bicycle he will fall off it. That is a metaphor for the journey through life of any living thing, and I think of any society of living things. --- William Golding

Recyclers Weekly Bulletin: 26 July, 2006

HI FOLKS (Paul Shragg here, filling in for Marty Weiss),

LAST WEEK: The good news this last week was no news (No paramedics!!!). Just a beautiful ride starting at the Old Town train station, heading north to the OB bike path, catching the path west into OBs Robb Field, where we caught Voltaire St. (east) to Catalina (south) finding our way to Cabrillo Park. Wow, GREAT views this last week! The ride from there included the great downhill run on Canon St., to Shelter Island (doing a Shelter Island loop), followed by a nice ride to Harbor Island (with a Harbor Island loop), eventually ending up downtown where we journeyed up First Ave to Mission Hills and found ourselves at a nice little roadside espresso bar/bakery (Espresso Mio). There, we caught some shade, a little breeze and some fuel, for the final downhill through Presido Park and back into the train station. In all, a very enjoyable 30.8 mile run. A good time was had by all (12 or 13 or us).

OTHER NEWS: In keeping with our new tradition, at Walt Zybko's suggestion, that we add some additional miles to our rides, an additional loop at the end of this weeks ride will be provided (see below). The big GOOD news item this last week comes from Jim Scudder, who has reported that he wont need surgery after all, to repair his broken bone(s). Great news, Jim. Hope youre feeling better, and were all wishing you the speediest of recoveries. Were all looking forward to seeing you again on our rides soon, Jim, training wheels and all (ha ha). The other big news item this week come courtesy of Neil Schnieder who is progressing nicely on our listserv and the Recyclers own web site (GREAT work Neil!!! We all really appreciate your efforts). I look forward to being able to contribute to the site myself in the future. If you havent already subscribed to the listserv, and you would like to, (I counted 22 of us who already have), you can subscribe via the World Wide Web by visiting http://www.sdrecyclers.org/mailman/listinfo/cycle-list or, via email, by sending a message with subject or body 'help' to cycle-list-request@linuxgeek.net If you would like to contact Neil directly on his telephone or by e-mail. The Recyclers web page is http://www.sdrecyclers.org/ . Check it out!

DE RIDE: This week's ride will be SUNDAY July 30th and will be the 35 miler from the Solana Beach train station to Oceanside, and back. As always, we will meet at the Solana Beach Amtrak station at 8:00 for an 8:15 departure. Remember, we decided to park at the northeast end of the parking lot but not actually in the parking lot as we got some grief from one of the security guards on one of our rides. We'll head north mostly along Pacific Coast Hwy and Neptune St and take a break at the Oceanside Marina, shoot the breeze, refuel, and then return along PCH and Vulcan St.

DE ADDITIONAL RIDE: The additional miles this week were posted in the July 22nd (Saturday) Wheels section of the SD Union Tribune and were presented as a nice 15 mile drive (Thanks for the info Marty!). The ride goes east up Chesterfield to San Elijo Ave, past some beautiful wetlands, onto Manchester Ave., into Rancho Santa Fe and back over to Lomas Santa Fe Dr. Ill provide the specific directions on Sunday. Those of us who want to ride the additional miles will return to the Solana Beach Train Station with the group (NO ONE GETS LEFT BEHIND) and then double back to Chesterfield (1/2 mile away) to begin the additional 15 mile run.

FINAL TID BITS: Michael Goldbaum has suggested that on one of our Oceanside runs we, instead of turning around at the Oceanside Harbor, continue on through Pendleton to Las Pulgas Rd, increasing the mileage of the ride to between 50-55 miles. To quote Michael, from a recent email of his, It's easy. It's about 55 to 60 miles round trip from Solana Beach and basically flat. Finally, Ken Robb has requested that we consider times, other than Sunday mornings for our rides, as he has commitments at Church that prevent him from joining us then. Maybe we should consider some more Saturday rides or Sunday afternoon ventures. Or???

Thats it for now. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, be sure to phone me

Until then, be safe, keep riding, and dont forget to move em on, and head em out.

I hope to see you all Sunday at 8:00 for our 8:15 departure.

Kindest Regards All,

Paul Shragg
